Definitions of the terms used across the platform guide, in plain language. Teacher-evaluation terms have their own list in the Teacher Evaluation glossary.
People and access
School administrator: someone who runs a single school end to end.
Department administrator: an administrator whose reach is limited to one department.
Teacher: a staff member who teaches classes and records grades, attendance, and exam scores.
Student: a learner who views materials, submits work, and receives results and certificates.
Role: what a person is allowed to see and do. Access follows the role and is enforced by the platform.
Workspace / tenant: one school's private area on the platform. Data stays within it.
Edition (plan): a named package of features that decides which parts of Lernmark a school can use.
Structure and academics
Institution: the school itself; a workspace can hold more than one.
Campus: a physical branch of an institution.
Department: a grouping of related subjects or staff.
Programme: a course of study, such as a degree or diploma.
Level: a stage or year within a program.
Class section: a specific group of students taught together.
School year: the academic year your school runs on, like 2026/2027 (sometimes called an academic session).
Term: a subdivision of a session, such as "Term 1".
Course: a subject in your catalog.
Offering: a course being taught in a session by a particular teacher; the real class students attend.
Course plan: the set of required and optional courses for a program level.
Enrollment: the link that places a student in a class section.
Teaching and assessment
Module: a section of a course that groups related materials, or a component of a certificate program.
Material: a document, link, or file shared with a class.
Publish: make content visible to enrolled students.
Assignment: a task students complete and submit.
Discussion: a class conversation held in one place.
Gradebook: the running record of a student's marks for a class.
Grading scheme: the rules that turn raw marks into grades, including the pass mark and letter grades.
Sequence: one assessment point in a term, such as "Midterm", which can carry a weight.
Weight: how much a sequence or module counts toward an overall result.
Report card: the official summary of a student's term results.
Admissions and money
Applicant: someone applying to the school who is not yet a student.
Status: where an applicant or invoice sits in its process.
Fee structure: a reusable template of charges you can apply to many students.
Invoice: a bill issued to a student.
Payment method: how a payment was made, such as cash or bank transfer.
Credit note: an amount that reduces what a student owes.
Write-off: an owed amount cleared because it will not be collected.
Scholarship / discount: a reduction applied to a student's fees.
Late fee: a penalty added to an overdue invoice.
Refund: money returned to a student.
Collection rate: the share of billed fees that has been collected.
Subscription (Billing): your own account with Lernmark: your plan and how many student places you use. Separate from student fees.
Credentials and communication
Certificate of completion: an official document confirming a trainee finished, with no marks.
Verification code: the code that lets anyone confirm a certificate is genuine.
Announcement: a message sent to a chosen audience.
In-app notification: a message that appears inside Lernmark when the recipient logs in.
Calendar: a month view of key dates such as term boundaries and due dates.
Audit log: a record of key actions across the platform: who did what, and when.
